Initially, our company acted as the marketing arm of Amka Registered Trustees, with the aim of exporting handicrafts of rural artisans and small-scale producer groups. Amka, (“Kuamka”, Swahili meaning for “to awaken”), itself was formed in 1994 with the support of the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) and funds by the British government. Our brand name, Kwanza Collection Company Ltd (“Kwanza”, Swahili meaning for “first”), was registered in November 1999 and we started our operations in May 2001 as a privately run Tanzanian company. Since then we are successfully enabling small-scale producers throughout Tanzania in creating and sustaining economic growth in their specific handcraft or food sector. We are focusing on unique handmade products with certified origin in Tanzania. As a member of the World Fair Trade Organization our vision lies in promoting and marketing these products on a national and international scale to be part of a fair economic growth and sustainable development of Tanzania.
